Solution

To minimize your speed on the skateboard, you should catch the ball. This is because of the law of conservation of momentum. When you catch the ball, the momentum of the ball is transferred to you and the skateboard, causing you to move in the direction the ball was thrown. However, if you deflect the ball, not only is the initial momentum of the ball transferred to you, but additional momentum is added when you push the ball away. This additional momentum will cause you to move faster on the skateboard. Therefore, to minimize your speed, you should catch the ball.
