The alternate names for the synovial joints are as follows:

1. Trochoid joint: This is also known as the pivot joint. In this type of joint, one bone rotates around another.

2. Spheroidal joint: This is also known as the ball-and-socket joint. It allows for radial movement in almost any direction. Examples include the hip and shoulder joints.

3. Gliding joint: This is also known as the plane joint. These joints allow for gliding movements, and are found between flat or slightly curved surfaces of bones.

4. Ellipsoidal joint: This is also known as the condyloid joint. It allows movement in two planes, without rotation. An example is the joint between the metacarpal and the first phalanx.

5. Sellar joint: This is also known as the saddle joint. It allows movement in two planes, with some limited rotation. An example is the joint at the base of the thumb.
