Solution

One of the recent hazardous material spills occurred in Norilsk, Russia in May 2020. A fuel storage tank at a power plant owned by Norilsk Nickel, the world's largest producer of nickel and palladium, collapsed, spilling 20,000 tons of diesel fuel into the Ambarnaya River.

The primary chemical released in this disaster was diesel fuel, which is a complex mixture of hydrocarbons. The main components of diesel are alkanes, cycloalkanes and aromatic hydrocarbons. Diesel fuel is harmful to health. Short-term exposure can cause dizziness, headaches, nausea and irritation of the eyes, skin and respiratory tract. Long-term exposure can lead to more serious health problems like kidney damage and increased risk of cancer.

The remediation plan involved several steps. First, booms were used to prevent the further spread of the diesel fuel in the river. Then, the fuel was skimmed off the surface of the water. In some areas, the contaminated soil was removed. The cleanup was complicated by the remote location and the presence of permafrost. The Russian government declared a state of emergency to mobilize resources for the cleanup. Norilsk Nickel was ordered to pay for the cleanup, which was estimated to cost 10 billion rubles (about $146 million).

The spill had a devastating impact on the local environment. It killed fish and other aquatic life, contaminated the water supply, and could have long-term effects on the health of people in the region. The cleanup is expected to take years. This disaster highlights the risks associated with storing hazardous materials in environmentally sensitive areas.
