Solution

Donald Schön, an influential thinker in developing the theory and practice of reflective professional learning, identified three types of reflection:

  1. Knowing-in-action: This is the kind of reflection that happens in the moment, while we are carrying out an activity. It's the tacit knowledge we have from experience, which guides our actions without us consciously thinking about it. For example, a teacher might adjust their teaching style in the middle of a lesson based on the reactions of the students, without consciously thinking about why they are doing it.

  2. Reflection-in-action: This type of reflection also happens during the activity, but it involves a conscious thought process. It's when we think about what we are doing while we are doing it, and make adjustments based on these thoughts. For example, a nurse might notice that a patient is reacting negatively to a certain treatment, and consciously decide to try a different approach.

  3. Reflection-on-action: This type of reflection happens after the activity has been completed. It involves looking back on what we did, and thinking about how it went, what we could have done differently, and what we have learned from the experience. For example, a manager might reflect on a project after it has been completed, and use these reflections to improve future projects.

These three types of reflection are not mutually exclusive, and often overlap in practice. They are all important for learning and improving in any profession.
