Group 2 elements are known as alkaline earth metals and include beryllium, magnesium, calcium, strontium, barium, and radium. Group 2 elements generally form ionic compounds; these will be soluble in water if they form a cation that is soluble, such as Na+ or NH4+.

  1. Reactions with Water:

    • Group 2 Oxides: When Group 2 oxides are added to water, they react to form hydroxides. For example, calcium oxide reacts with water to form calcium hydroxide: CaO + H2O -> Ca(OH)2
    • Group 2 Hydroxides: Group 2 hydroxides are slightly soluble in water and the solution is basic due to the dissolved OH- ions. For example, magnesium hydroxide is slightly soluble in water: Mg(OH)2 (s) <-> Mg2+ (aq) + 2OH- (aq)
    • Group 2 Carbonates: Group 2 carbonates are practically insoluble in water. However, they do dissolve in water containing CO2 to form bicarbonates. For example, calcium carbonate reacts with water and carbon dioxide to form calcium bicarbonate: CaCO3 + CO2 + H2O -> Ca(HCO3)2
  2. Reactions with Dilute Hydrochloric Acid:

    • Group 2 Oxides: Group 2 oxides react with acids to form a salt and water. For example, calcium oxide reacts with hydrochloric acid to form calcium chloride and water: CaO + 2HCl -> CaCl2 + H2O
    • Group 2 Hydroxides: Group 2 hydroxides react with acids to form a salt and water. For example, magnesium hydroxide reacts with hydrochloric acid to form magnesium chloride and water: Mg(OH)2 + 2HCl -> MgCl2 + 2H2O
    • Group 2 Carbonates: Group 2 carbonates react with acids to form a salt, water, and carbon dioxide. For example, calcium carbonate reacts with hydrochloric acid to form calcium chloride, water, and carbon dioxide: CaCO3 + 2HCl -> CaCl2 + H2O + CO2
  3. Reactions with Dilute Sulfuric Acid:

    • Group 2 Oxides: Group 2 oxides react with acids to form a salt and water. For example, calcium oxide reacts with sulfuric acid to form calcium sulfate and water: CaO + H2SO4 -> CaSO4 + H2O
    • Group 2 Hydroxides: Group 2 hydroxides react with acids to form a salt and water. For example, magnesium hydroxide reacts with sulfuric acid to form magnesium sulfate and water: Mg(OH)2 + H2SO4 -> MgSO4 + 2H2O
    • Group 2 Carbonates: Group 2 carbonates react with acids to form a salt, water, and carbon dioxide. For example, calcium carbonate reacts with sulfuric acid to form calcium sulfate, water, and carbon dioxide: CaCO3 + H2SO4 -> CaSO4 + H2O + CO2
