Here's how it works:

  1. The attacker sends a large amount of ICMP echo (ping) traffic to IP broadcast addresses, all of it having a spoofed source IP of the intended victim.

  2. If the routing device delivers these IP broadcasts to all hosts, the Smurf amplifier will end up sending traffic to all hosts.

  3. Each receiving host responds to these pings and sends replies to the spoofed IP.

  4. As a result, the victim IP address is flooded with replies from all the hosts on the network. This can slow down the victim's network or even completely bring it down due to the overwhelming traffic, hence causing a Denial of Service.
