Selection in an organization refers to the process by which managers and others use specific instruments to choose from a pool of applicants a person or persons more likely to succeed in the job(s), given management goals and legal requirements.

Here are the steps involved in the selection process:

  1. Preliminary Interview: This is usually a short duration interview to give the employer a brief insight into the candidate's profile. It helps to eliminate those candidates who do not meet the minimum eligibility criteria of the organization.

  2. Application Forms: The candidates who clear the preliminary interview are required to fill an application form. It contains a record of candidate's detailed information like age, qualifications, reason for leaving the previous job, experience, etc.

  3. Written Tests: Various written tests are conducted during the selection process. These tests are used to objectively assess the potential candidate. They may be aptitude tests, personality tests, and ability tests and are used to judge how well an individual can perform tasks related to the job.

  4. Employment Interviews: It is a one-to-one interaction between the interviewer and the potential candidate. It is used to find whether the candidate is best suited for the required job or not.

  5. Medical Examination: Medical tests are conducted to ensure physical fitness of the potential employee. It will decrease chances of employee absenteeism.

  6. Appointment Letter: A reference check is made about the candidate selected and then finally he is appointed by giving a formal appointment letter.
