Solution

The pretracheal fascia encloses the following structures:

  1. Thyroid gland: This is a butterfly-shaped gland located in the front of the neck. It produces hormones that regulate the body's metabolic rate as well as heart and digestive function, muscle control, brain development, mood, and bone maintenance.

  2. Trachea: Also known as the windpipe, this is a tube that connects the pharynx and larynx to the lungs, allowing the passage of air.

  3. Esophagus: This is a muscular tube connecting the throat (pharynx) with the stomach. The esophagus carries food, liquids, and saliva from the mouth to the stomach.

  4. Recurrent laryngeal nerves: These are branches of the vagus nerve (tenth cranial nerve) that go to the larynx (voice box). They provide sensation to the larynx and also motor function to all the muscles of the larynx except for the cricothyroid muscle.

  5. Parathyroid glands: These are small endocrine glands in the neck that produce parathyroid hormone. Humans usually have four parathyroid glands, which are usually located on the posterior surface of the thyroid gland, or, in rare cases, within the thyroid gland itself or in the chest.

  6. Lymph nodes: These are small, bean-shaped structures that produce and store cells that fight infection and disease. The ones in the neck (cervical lymph nodes) may become noticeable and painful during a common cold or infection.
