  3. Exposure: The photoresist-coated substrate is then exposed to a pattern of intense light. The pattern is defined by a photomask, which is a plate with areas that are transparent to light and areas that are opaque to light. The light causes a chemical reaction in the exposed areas of the photoresist.

  4. Post-Exposure Bake: After exposure, the substrate is baked again to further the chemical reactions in the photoresist.

  5. Development: The substrate is then immersed in a developer solution that removes the areas of photoresist that were exposed to light (in positive photoresist) or the areas that were not exposed to light (in negative photoresist).

  6. Etching: The developed photoresist then serves as a mask, protecting parts of the wafer during the subsequent etching process. The unprotected parts of the wafer are etched away by chemicals or by a plasma (reactive-ion etching).

  7. Photoresist Removal: After etching, the remaining photoresist is removed, leaving the desired pattern on the wafer.

These steps can be repeated multiple times to create complex patterns of different materials on the wafer. The result is a microfabricated device or part of a device.
