Solution

Gas exchange in the alveoli of the lungs occurs in several steps:

  1. Inhalation: When we breathe in, air enters the lungs and travels down the bronchial tubes and into the alveoli, which are tiny air sacs.

  2. Diffusion: The walls of the alveoli are very thin and are surrounded by a network of tiny blood vessels, or capillaries. Oxygen in the air inside the alveoli diffuses across the alveolar wall, through the capillary wall, and into the blood in the capillaries.

  3. Oxygen Transport: Once in the blood, oxygen binds to hemoglobin in red blood cells. This oxygen-rich blood is then carried from the lungs to the heart, which pumps the blood to the rest of the body.

  4. Carbon Dioxide Transport: At the same time, carbon dioxide, a waste product of cellular respiration, diffuses from the blood in the capillaries, across the capillary and alveolar walls, and into the alveoli.

  5. Exhalation: When we breathe out, the carbon dioxide is expelled from the alveoli and leaves the body.

This process of gas exchange in the alveoli allows the body to get rid of carbon dioxide and take in the oxygen it needs to function.
