Solution

The function of the ovaries is to produce eggs (ova) and female hormones estrogen and progesterone. Here are the steps:

  1. The ovaries are part of the female reproductive system. They are located in the lower abdomen, on both sides of the uterus.

  2. Each month, during the menstrual cycle, an egg is released from one ovary in a process called ovulation.

  3. Besides producing and releasing eggs, the ovaries also have the function of secreting female hormones.

  4. These hormones, estrogen and progesterone, play vital roles in a host of bodily processes, including the development of female secondary sexual characteristics, regulation of the menstrual cycle and pregnancy.

  5. Estrogen helps to regulate the menstrual cycle and is also important for bone health. Progesterone prepares the uterus for pregnancy after ovulation.

  6. If the egg is fertilized by a sperm, it may implant in the uterus and begin to grow into a baby. If the egg is not fertilized, it will be shed along with the lining of the uterus during menstruation.

  7. The ovaries also produce a small amount of male hormones (androgens).

  8. The balance of these hormones is crucial for normal sexual development and fertility.
