Question

Iron loss an electrical transformer occurs in

Solution

Iron loss in an electrical transformer occurs in two ways:

  1. Hysteresis Loss: This type of loss occurs due to the magnetization and demagnetization of the core. When the magnetic field changes in the core, the magnetization of the core changes. This constant change leads to energy loss in the form of heat, known as hysteresis loss.

  2. Eddy Current Loss: This type of loss occurs due to the formation of eddy currents in the iron core. When the alternating current passes through the transformer, it produces a changing magnetic field. This changing magnetic field induces eddy currents in the core, which circulate within the core and produce heat. This heat is the eddy current loss.

These two losses together are known as iron losses or core losses in a transformer. They are constant for a given voltage and frequency and occur whenever the transformer is energized, even if it is not supplying any load.
