What are the switching services provided by Layer 2 switches?

Layer 2 switches, also known as data link layer switches, provide several key services:

1. Frame Switching: The primary function of a Layer 2 switch is to switch frames from one device to another. It does this by using the MAC address of the devices that are connected to it. When a frame arrives at a switch, the switch examines the destination MAC address and forwards the frame to the appropriate port.

2. MAC Address Learning: Layer 2 switches automatically learn the MAC addresses of all devices connected to them and store these addresses in a MAC address table or forwarding database. This allows the switch to forward frames destined for a specific device to the port where the device is connected.

3. Loop Avoidance: Layer 2 switches use the Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) to prevent network loops. Network loops can cause broadcast storms that can bring down a network. STP allows switches to create a loop-free logical topology.

4. VLANs: Layer 2 switches can create Virtual Local Area Networks (VLANs), which are logical groupings of devices that can be located anywhere in the network. VLANs can improve network performance by limiting broadcast traffic to a specific group of devices.

5. Quality of Service (QoS): Some Layer 2 switches can provide QoS, which allows the switch to prioritize certain types of traffic over others. This can be important for ensuring that critical traffic like VoIP or video conferencing gets the bandwidth it needs to perform well.

6. Link Aggregation: Layer 2 switches can combine multiple network connections into a single link, to increase the link speed beyond the limits of any one single cable or port, and to provide redundancy in case one link fails.
