Briefly describe the mineral resources of Assam

Assam, a state in northeastern India, is rich in mineral resources such as coal, petroleum, natural gas and limestone.

1. Coal: Assam has the largest coal reserves in the northeastern region. The Makum coalfields in the Tinsukia district of Assam have been operational since 1882. The coal found in Assam is of high quality and is characterised by high carbon content and low moisture and sulphur levels.

2. Petroleum: Assam is the first state in India where petroleum was discovered. Digboi, Naharkatiya and Moran are the major oil fields in Assam. The Assam oil, natural gas and condensate reserves are located in the Assam-Arakan basin.

3. Natural Gas: Assam also has significant reserves of natural gas. The gas reserves are spread across the oil fields of Digboi, Naharkatiya, and Moran, and the gas fields of Geleki, Rudrasagar, and Charali.

4. Limestone: Assam is also rich in limestone with large reserves found in the Karbi Anglong and North Cachar Hills districts. The high-grade limestone is used in the manufacturing of cement and in the metallurgical industry.

5. Other Minerals: Other minerals found in Assam include minor amounts of feldspar, quartz, kaolin, dolomite, sillimanite, clay, and refractory minerals.
