  3. Electrons: These are negatively charged particles that orbit the nucleus in energy levels often visualized as a cloud around the nucleus. The number of electrons in a neutral atom is equal to the number of protons. Electrons are much smaller than protons and neutrons, and they are involved in chemical reactions and bond formation between atoms.
