What method is used to separate the different parts of crude oil?

Crude oil is separated into its various components through a process called fractional distillation. Here are the steps involved:

1. Heating: Crude oil is first heated in a furnace at around 350 degrees Celsius. This causes the oil to vaporize.

2. Entering the Fractionating Column: The vaporized oil then enters the fractionating column, which is a tall tower filled with trays or plates. The column is hotter at the bottom and cooler at the top.

3. Separation of Components: As the vapor rises through the column, the different components or 'fractions' of the oil start to separate. This is because each fraction has a different boiling point. The fractions with higher boiling points condense at the hotter, lower levels of the column, while those with lower boiling points condense at the cooler, higher levels.

4. Collection of Fractions: Each fraction is collected as it condenses and is led out of the column through a separate pipe. The fractions collected include gases (like propane and butane), gasoline, kerosene, diesel oil, lubricating oil, and residue (like bitumen).

5. Further Processing: Some of these fractions are further processed to make other useful products. For example, residues can be further distilled under high vacuum to produce lubricating oils or can be 'cracked' to produce more gasoline.

This process allows the various components of crude oil to be separated and used in different ways, from fuel for vehicles to raw material for plastics.
