Covalent defects, also known as point defects, are irregularities or deviations from the ideal arrangement in a crystalline structure. These defects occur at a single point or a few lattice points. They are of four types: vacancy defects, interstitial defects, Frenkel defects, and Schottky defects.

  1. Vacancy Defects: This occurs when some of the lattice sites are vacant. In a crystal, if some of the constituent particles are missing from their regular lattice sites, then the crystal is said to have a vacancy defect.

  2. Interstitial Defects: This occurs when some constituent particles (atoms or molecules) occupy the interstitial sites. An interstitial defect increases the density of the substance.

  3. Frenkel Defect: This defect is shown by ionic solids. The smaller ion (usually cation) is dislocated from its normal site to an interstitial site. It creates a vacancy defect at its original position and an interstitial defect at its new location.

  4. Schottky Defect: This is a type of vacancy defect shown by ionic solids. In this defect, equal numbers of cations and anions are missing from the lattice, maintaining the electrical neutrality. The density of the substance decreases due to this defect.

These defects can affect the properties of the materials, including their electronic, optical, and mechanical properties.
