What do you think are the differences between physical and chemical changes?

Physical and chemical changes differ in several ways:

1. Nature of Change:

   • Physical Change: This is a change in which the form of matter is altered but one substance is not transformed into another. For example, melting of ice into water.
   • Chemical Change: This is a change where a new substance is formed. For example, burning of wood produces ash, smoke and heat.

2. Reversibility:

   • Physical Change: These changes are generally reversible, i.e., can be reversed by changing the conditions. For example, water can be re-frozen into ice.
   • Chemical Change: These changes are usually irreversible. For example, once wood is burnt into ash, it cannot be reversed back into wood.

3. Change in Composition:

   • Physical Change: There is no change in the composition of the substance. For example, water remains H2O whether it is in solid, liquid or gaseous state.
   • Chemical Change: The composition of the substance changes. For example, when wood burns, it no longer remains wood but changes into ash, smoke and other compounds.

4. Energy Changes:

   • Physical Change: Usually involves changes in physical properties such as shape, size, color and state, and does not involve a change in the substance's internal energy.
   • Chemical Change: Always involves a change in the substance's internal energy. For example, burning of wood releases heat energy.

5. Change in Properties:

   • Physical Change: The original properties of the substance are retained. For example, water remains water whether it is in solid, liquid or gaseous state.
   • Chemical Change: The original properties of the substance are lost and new properties are acquired. For example, burnt wood (ash) has different properties than the original wood.
