Values and norms are fundamental elements that shape a society's culture and behavior.

Values are the shared beliefs or ideals that a group of people hold. They provide the context within which a society's norms are established and justified. In other words, values are the guiding principles that dictate what is considered right and wrong, important, and worthwhile in a particular society. They form the bedrock of a culture, influencing the way individuals think, behave, and make decisions.

On the other hand, norms are the unwritten rules that govern the behavior of individuals within a society. They are the expectations and guidelines for how members of a society should act in given situations. Norms can be further categorized into two types: folkways and mores.

Folkways are the routine conventions of everyday life. They are norms that, when violated, result in mild social disapproval but no severe punishments. For example, etiquette rules are folkways.

Mores, on the other hand, are norms that are seen as central to the functioning of a society and to its social life. They are considered more serious than folkways and their violation usually leads to more severe social disapproval or sanctions. For example, laws are often based on societal mores.
