Solution

(i) The molar mass of Fe2O3 is approximately 159.69 g/mol (55.85 g/mol for Fe * 2 + 16.00 g/mol for O * 3). The molar mass of Fe is approximately 55.85 g/mol. Therefore, the percentage by mass of iron in iron(III) oxide is (55.85 g/mol * 2) / 159.69 g/mol * 100% = 69.94%.

(ii) The iron ore which consists mainly of iron(III) oxide is called Hematite.

(iii) Carbon monoxide is formed in the blast furnace through the reaction of carbon (in the form of coke) with hot air. The oxygen in the air reacts with the carbon to form carbon monoxide.

(iv) The symbol equation to show the reaction that occurs when iron(III) oxide is converted to iron in the blast furnace is: Fe2O3 + 3CO -> 2Fe + 3CO2

(v) The chemical process which happens to iron when iron(III) oxide is converted to iron in the blast furnace is called Reduction.

(c) The type of reaction shown by equation 2 is a Redox reaction.
