In more scientific terms, a gene is a sequence of nucleotides in DNA or RNA that codes for a molecule that has a function. The DNA is transcribed into RNA, and then translated into a protein, which carries out a specific function in the cell. Genes are the basic physical and functional units of heredity. They are made up of DNA and reside on chromosomes.
