Solution

A super saturated solution is not stable in the presence of crystals of solid because the excess solute in the solution is in a state of unstable equilibrium. When crystals of solid are introduced, they provide a surface for the excess solute to attach to and form new crystals. This process is known as crystallization. As more and more solute molecules attach to the growing crystals, the concentration of the solute in the solution decreases. Eventually, the concentration of the solute in the solution becomes lower than its saturation point, causing the excess solute to come out of the solution and form new crystals. This leads to a decrease in the concentration of the solute in the solution and the formation of a new equilibrium state. Therefore, a super saturated solution is not stable in the presence of crystals of solid because it will undergo crystallization to reach a more stable equilibrium state.
