Solution

a) The word equation for the reaction of chlorine with aqueous potassium bromide is:

chlorine + potassium bromide → potassium chloride + bromine

b) An aqueous solution of iodine does not react with potassium chloride because iodine is less reactive than chlorine. In the halogen group, reactivity decreases as you move down the group. Therefore, a less reactive halogen cannot displace a more reactive halogen from its salt solution. Since iodine is below chlorine in the group, it cannot displace chlorine from potassium chloride.
