question: According to Higgs and Letseka (2022),“uBuntu translates to a commitment to peaceful co-existence among ordinary South Africans despite their differences.”Make recommendations to your colleagues on what learners should be taught regarding interaction with their teachers based on the uBuntu principles, considering diversity and power relations in the classroom. my answer: In a classroom setting interconnection can be taught by first understanding that learners’ actions and attitudes can easily influence others. Learners must be exposed to ubuntu principles from the beginning of the academic year by implementing these principles as part of the daily program and class management strategies. Learners must be explained that the class must be viewed as one entity, meaning that the class environment will be like a community supporting each other, lending a helping hand to those that need guidance to foster a sense of solidarity and belonging. Teachers first must set the expectations for both teacher and learner environment before addressing how learners must interact with teachers, as Ubuntu represent “I am because we are” (Zvomuya, 2020), this ideology represent that we as humanity are defined by relationships and not by individualism. Respect is another key concept to establish. In the classroom setting respect should be shown regardless of differences. As teacher we should value our learners regardless of their background and perspectives. Firstly, teachers always must keep in mind that learners learn through observation, through your action, they will acknowledge and learn respectful behaviour, always lead by example. Then how learners interact with teachers can also be taught by setting clear expectations for the learners. We can encourage learners to communicate with teachers respectfully. Examples can include rising your hand when you have an answer or need extra guidance, waiting your turn when the teacher is helping another peer in the class (showing respect for the teacher and peer), greeting teachers to show acknowledgement, showing respect by listening during class discussions and activities. To teach learners respect amongst their peers, by being inclusive and kind, can show kindness and respect towards the teachers’ time and efforts towards lesson planning. Ubuntu can help create an inclusive classroom environment where everyone feels valued and accepted. For diversity to be respected, it is the teachers responsibility to show respect towards the learners various cultural, socio-economic, and academic background (diverse needs related to academics). Teachers have to build trust within the classroom setting to ensure that learners will also practice these principles. They will build trust and cooperation amongst peers when diversity is respected, contributing to the interconnection of a supportive class community. Teachers can use different strategies such as using different teaching resources, books, posters, stories and exposure to other languages, to teach diversity and establish respectful awareness. This will create awareness and foster an inclusive environment where everyone in the classroom can feel respected and appreciated. With regards to authority, ubuntu promotes inclusivity that aims to create an environment where all learners and teachers feel respected and valued regardless of power dynamic. Teachers who teach ubuntu principles will establish trusting relationships between peers and teacher that will reduce how we see view power dynamics in the classroom setting and will lead to creating a fair learning environment. When conflict arises within the classroom, diversity must be respected by understanding other people’s perspectives and viewpoints. Disagreements must be handled with empathy and willingness to find mutual solutions. Teachers can equip learners with skills to resolve conflict peacefully, by encouraging open communication and addressing conflict in a respectful manner, especially when conflict occurs between teacher and learner. In this case the teachers should always remain calm and respectful by taking learners background into consideration and listening to the learner’s perspective. Power dynamics can also be promoted within a classroom through ubuntu principles. The teacher can provide leadership role opportunities and expose learners to be more accountable for other learners within the classroom community. This can help learners to understand how to lead in a positive manner, support and respect their peers. Ubuntu principles can be integrated through our teaching strategies and curriculum. Teachers must reflect on curriculum content and how we as teachers can support/promote diverse cultural backgrounds, histories and different perspectives within the curriculum content. Exposing learners to an inclusive curriculum will expand learners understanding toward interconnection towards the class community. Collaborative learning also mirrors Ubuntu principles of teamwork, community/peer support and shared responsibility. Encouraging your learners to take turns and to learn from each other will create a sense of equality and respect for other learners’ abilities and knowledge. By implementing these teaching strategies learners will get to know their peers within their class community that will gradually build positive relationships that are based on trust, empathy and respect. These factors all play a part in the overall teacher and learner interaction as Ubuntu represents “I am because we are” (Zvomuya, 2020). is my answer correct
