Biopsychosocial model

The Biopsychosocial model is a broad view that attributes disease outcome to the intricate, variable interaction of biological factors (genetic, biochemical, etc), psychological factors (mood, personality, behavior, etc.), and social factors (cultural, familial, socioeconomic, medical, etc.). This model was proposed by George L. Engel in 1977.

Here are the steps to understand this model:

1. Biological Factors: These are the physical or biological aspects of the disease. They include the genetic predisposition of the individual, the presence of any pathogens, and the state of physical health. For example, in the case of a disease like diabetes, biological factors would include the individual's genetic predisposition to the disease, their current blood sugar levels, and their overall physical health.

2. Psychological Factors: These are the mental and emotional aspects of the disease. They include the individual's mood, personality, and behavior. For example, in the case of diabetes, psychological factors could include the individual's stress levels, their ability to cope with the diagnosis, and their adherence to the treatment plan.

3. Social Factors: These are the societal and environmental aspects of the disease. They include the individual's cultural background, socioeconomic status, and access to healthcare. For example, in the case of diabetes, social factors could include the individual's access to healthy food, their ability to afford medication, and their access to regular medical check-ups.

The Biopsychosocial model suggests that all of these factors interact to result in the overall health outcome of the individual. It emphasizes the importance of looking at all aspects of an individual's life and health, rather than just focusing on the physical symptoms of a disease.
