The proliferation, if not the outright and calloused production of X-rated or pornographic films in the Philippine industry, has aroused the vigilance of the public against such “art” that is feared to destroy the social fiber and moral foundation of our society. As the country is submerged in utmost poverty, some factors in our society, like the makers of pornographic films, have the temerity to provide what they call a panacea – a cure for all Juan dela Cruz’s social and economic problems. Ironically, this is the medicine that weakens the patient. The kinds of films we most need nowadays are those that inspire us to face our economic and social realities. Let us not forget the reasons why we devote so much time and money in making these films. Definitely, pornographic or lewd movies do not belong to these reasons. MTRCB’s Chairman Armida Siguion-Reyna’s mouthing and defending what she calls “art” and her deliberate denial of the board’s responsibility in the formation of the youth should be lessened and should be redirected to the board’s sincere regulation and evaluation of such movies. Siguion-Reyna is destroying the reputation of the MTRCB and the honest intention of some to cleanse our films of artistic junks. These porno films should be banned because they give nothing but a pain in the groin and a temporary escape from what face us everyday – price hike, unemployment, criminalities, moral degeneration, corruption, curtailment of press freedom, etc. No matter how greatly justified, these X-rated films can never be called “art.” For how can something be an art if it destroys and shakes the very foundation of our society?
