Solution

During the boiling process, water molecules undergo several changes:

  1. Heat Absorption: When heat is applied to water, the water molecules start to absorb this energy.

  2. Increased Kinetic Energy: As the water molecules absorb heat, their kinetic energy increases. This means they start moving faster and faster.

  3. Breaking of Hydrogen Bonds: Water molecules are held together by hydrogen bonds. As the kinetic energy of the water molecules increases, these bonds start to break.

  4. Conversion to Steam: Once enough hydrogen bonds are broken, the water molecules can escape as steam or water vapor. This is what we see as boiling.

  5. Constant Temperature: Interestingly, during the entire boiling process, the temperature of the water remains constant at 100 degrees Celsius (at sea level). This is because all the heat energy goes into breaking the hydrogen bonds, not increasing the temperature.

  6. Evaporation: Once all the water has turned into steam, the boiling process ends.
