Solution

The pretracheal fascia encloses the following structures:

  1. Thyroid gland: This is a butterfly-shaped gland located in the front of the neck. It produces hormones that regulate the body's metabolic rate as well as heart and digestive function, muscle control, brain development, mood, and bone maintenance.

  2. Trachea: Also known as the windpipe, this is a tube that connects the pharynx and larynx to the lungs, allowing the passage of air.

  3. Esophagus: This is a muscular tube connecting the pharynx (throat) with the stomach. The esophagus carries food and liquids from the mouth to the stomach for digestion.

  4. Recurrent laryngeal nerves: These are branches of the vagus nerve (tenth cranial nerve) that supply all the intrinsic muscles of the larynx, with the exception of the cricothyroid muscles. They also provide sensory innervation to the larynx and the upper part of the esophagus.
