Solution

The physical state of all the solutions X, Y, and Z is liquid. When we look at the components of each solution:

  • Solution X is made of sugar and water. Sugar in its original state is solid and water is liquid. When sugar is dissolved in water, it changes its state from solid to liquid. So, solution X has a different physical state than one of its parts (sugar).

  • Solution Y is made of sugar and cranberry juice. Sugar is solid and cranberry juice is liquid. Similar to solution X, when sugar is dissolved in cranberry juice, it changes its state from solid to liquid. So, solution Y also has a different physical state than one of its parts (sugar).

  • Solution Z is made of cranberry juice and water. Both cranberry juice and water are in liquid state. So, solution Z does not have a different physical state than any of its parts.

Therefore, the solutions that have a different physical state than one or both of their parts are X and Y only. So, the answer is C. X and Y only.
