Solution

The history of manufacturing firms in Uganda dates back to the post-independence era in the 1960s. The government, under the leadership of Obote, initiated the first five-year development plan (1961-1966) which emphasized the establishment of manufacturing industries to process Uganda's raw materials for export (Jørgensen, 1981). The 1970s and 1980s, however, were marked by political instability and economic decline, which greatly affected the manufacturing sector. The manufacturing industry began to recover in the 1990s with the implementation of economic liberalization policies, which attracted foreign direct investment (FDI) into the country (Bategeka & Okumu, 2010). Today, the manufacturing sector in Uganda is diverse, with firms involved in the production of a wide range of products including food and beverages, textiles, leather, wood, paper, chemicals, non-metallic minerals, and metal products (UBOS, 2019). Despite the progress, the sector still faces numerous challenges including inadequate infrastructure, high energy costs, and limited access to finance (World Bank, 2019).
