The Electromagnetic Spectrum is the range of all possible frequencies of electromagnetic radiation. It extends from below the low frequencies used for modern radio communication to gamma radiation at the short-wavelength (high-frequency) end, covering wavelengths from thousands of kilometers down to a fraction of the size of an atom.

The electromagnetic spectrum is divided into seven regions in order of decreasing wavelength and increasing energy and frequency. The common designations are radio waves, microwaves, infrared (IR), visible light, ultraviolet (UV), X-rays, and gamma rays.

  1. Radio Waves: These are used for various forms of communication such as television, radio, and satellite communications.

  2. Microwaves: Microwaves are used for high-speed microwave communication and radar. Microwaves are also used in microwave ovens where they cause water and fat molecules to vibrate, which produces heat.

  3. Infrared: Infrared light is used in industrial, scientific, and medical applications. Night-vision cameras, remote controls, and thermal imaging cameras all use infrared technology.

  4. Visible Light: This is the part of the spectrum that is visible to the human eye. Visible light is emitted by everything from stars to light bulbs.

  5. Ultraviolet: Ultraviolet light has many practical uses, including the sterilization of medical and dental tools and the creation of black lights. It is also what causes sunburn.

  6. X-rays: X-rays are used for medical imaging, treating cancer, and in industry for inspecting welds and materials for defects.

  7. Gamma Rays: Gamma rays are used in medicine to treat cancer and in industry to sterilize food and medical equipment.

Each type of electromagnetic wave interacts with matter differently. For example, radio waves can pass through the walls of houses, whereas visible light is blocked by them. Similarly, X-rays can pass through the human body, but are blocked by denser materials like bones. This property is what makes X-ray imaging possible.
