Solution

The OSI (Open Systems Interconnection) model is a conceptual framework that standardizes the functions of a communication system into seven categories, called layers. Here's a step-by-step breakdown of each layer:

  1. Physical Layer: This is the lowest layer of the OSI model. It deals with the physical characteristics of the transmission medium. It defines the electrical, mechanical, procedural, and functional specifications for activating, maintaining, and deactivating the physical link between end systems.

  2. Data Link Layer: This layer provides a means for exchanging data over a common local media. It provides functional and procedural means to transfer data between network entities and to detect and possibly correct errors that may occur in the physical layer.

  3. Network Layer: The network layer controls the operation of the subnet, deciding which physical path the data should take based on network conditions, priority of service, and other factors. It's responsible for packet forwarding including routing through intermediate routers.

  4. Transport Layer: This layer ensures that messages are delivered error-free, in sequence, and with no losses or duplications. It relieves the higher layer protocols from any concern with the transfer of data between them and their peers.

  5. Session Layer: The session layer establishes, manages and terminates connections between applications at each end. It provides its services to the presentation layer.

  6. Presentation Layer: This layer is responsible for the delivery and formatting of information to the application layer for further processing or display. It relieves the application layer of concern regarding syntactical differences in data representation within the end-user systems.

  7. Application Layer: The application layer serves as the window for users and application processes to access network services. This layer contains a variety of commonly needed functions.

Remember, data flows down the layers when being sent and up the layers when being received.
