Solution

a) The relative molecular mass of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) can be calculated by adding the atomic masses of one carbon atom and four chlorine atoms.

The atomic mass of carbon (C) is approximately 12.01 g/mol and the atomic mass of chlorine (Cl) is approximately 35.45 g/mol.

So, the relative molecular mass of CCl4 = (1 x 12.01 g/mol) + (4 x 35.45 g/mol) = 12.01 g/mol + 141.8 g/mol = 153.81 g/mol.

b) The formula mass of ammonium phosphate ((NH4)3PO4) can be calculated by adding the atomic masses of three nitrogen atoms, twelve hydrogen atoms, one phosphorus atom, and four oxygen atoms.

The atomic mass of nitrogen (N) is approximately 14.01 g/mol, hydrogen (H) is approximately 1.01 g/mol, phosphorus (P) is approximately 30.97 g/mol, and oxygen (O) is approximately 16.00 g/mol.

So, the formula mass of (NH4)3PO4 = (3 x 14.01 g/mol) + (12 x 1.01 g/mol) + (1 x 30.97 g/mol) + (4 x 16.00 g/mol) = 42.03 g/mol + 12.12 g/mol + 30.97 g/mol + 64.00 g/mol = 149.12 g/mol.
