Solution

In a blast furnace, the conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) to carbon monoxide (CO) occurs in several steps:

  1. Iron ore, coke (a form of carbon), and limestone are loaded into the top of the blast furnace.

  2. Hot air is blown into the bottom of the furnace. This air causes the coke to burn, which produces carbon dioxide (CO2).

  3. The carbon dioxide (CO2) then reacts with the remaining coke to produce carbon monoxide (CO). This reaction is known as the Boudouard reaction and can be represented by the following chemical equation: CO2 + C → 2CO.

  4. The carbon monoxide (CO) then reacts with the iron ore to reduce it to iron. This reaction can be represented by the following chemical equation: 3CO + Fe2O3 → 2Fe + 3CO2.

  5. The carbon dioxide (CO2) produced in step 4 can then react with more coke to produce additional carbon monoxide (CO), repeating the process.

This cycle continues until all the iron ore has been reduced to iron.
