peritoneal dialysis and its tyoes
Question
peritoneal dialysis and its tyoes
Solution
Peritoneal dialysis is a treatment for kidney failure that uses the lining of your abdomen, or belly, to filter your blood inside your body. Health care providers call this lining the peritoneum.
There are two types of peritoneal dialysis:
-
Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD): This is the most common type of peritoneal dialysis. It requires no machine and can be done in any clean, well-lit place. With CAPD, you fill your abdomen with dialysis solution, let it sit for a while (this is called dwell time), then drain it. You repeat this process four to five times during the day.
-
Continuous Cycling Peritoneal Dialysis (CCPD): Also known as Automated Peritoneal Dialysis (APD). This type of peritoneal dialysis uses a machine to cycle the dialysis solution in and out of your abdomen. It is usually done at night while you sleep.
Both types of peritoneal dialysis are effective for treating kidney failure. The best type for you depends on your personal situation, such as your health, lifestyle, and how much residual kidney function you have.
