Solution

A reflex arc is a neural pathway that controls a reflex action. In simpler terms, it's the route that an impulse takes to travel from the sensory neuron to the motor neuron, enabling a quick response to a stimulus without the need for conscious thought.

Here's an example of a reflex and the steps involved in its response:

  1. Stimulus: Let's take the example of touching a hot object. The heat from the object is the stimulus in this case.

  2. Receptor: The skin contains receptors that are sensitive to heat. These receptors detect the heat from the hot object.

  3. Sensory Neuron: Once the heat is detected, a signal or impulse is sent via the sensory neuron to the spinal cord. The sensory neuron carries information about the heat from the skin to the spinal cord.

  4. Interneuron: The interneuron in the spinal cord receives the signal from the sensory neuron and immediately sends a signal to the motor neuron. The interneuron acts as a sort of messenger or relay between the sensory and motor neurons.

  5. Motor Neuron: The motor neuron carries the signal from the interneuron to the effector, which in this case is the muscle in the hand.

  6. Effector: The effector (muscle) receives the signal from the motor neuron and responds by contracting, causing you to quickly pull your hand away from the hot object.

  7. Response: The response is the quick withdrawal of the hand from the hot object. This response happens so quickly that the brain doesn't have time to process what's happening until after the hand has been pulled away.

This entire process is known as a reflex arc. It's a fundamental mechanism in the nervous system that allows for quick reactions to potentially harmful stimuli.
