Solution

To solve this problem, we need to understand the structure of the boxes. There is one large box, inside which there are 15 medium boxes. Out of these 15 medium boxes, 7 have small boxes inside them, which means 8 medium boxes are empty.

Now, each of the 7 medium boxes that have boxes inside them contains 15 small boxes. But only one of these small boxes contains the gift, which means the rest are empty.

So, the total number of empty small boxes is 7 (medium boxes) * 15 (small boxes per medium box) - 1 (box with the gift) = 104.

Adding this to the 8 empty medium boxes, we get a total of 112 empty boxes.

So, the most appropriate option is that there were 112 empty boxes.
