What is the function of mitochondrion?

The mitochondrion is often referred to as the "powerhouse of the cell". It has two main functions:

1. Energy Production: The primary function of the mitochondria is to produce energy for the cell. This is done through a process called cellular respiration, where the mitochondria takes in nutrients from the cell, breaks it down, and turns it into energy. They are involved in a variety of cellular activities, such as cell growth and death, cell cycle and cell differentiation. They also help control the concentration of calcium within the cell, which is important for signal transduction pathways in the cell.

In addition to these functions, mitochondria also have their own DNA, separate from the DNA found in the cell nucleus. This allows them to reproduce independently from the cell, a characteristic that is believed to have evolved from their origin as separate organisms.
