1. Changes to the Equality Act 2010:

To improve the protection for people with disabilities, I propose that the Equality Act 2010 be amended to provide clearer guidelines on what constitutes 'reasonable adjustments'. This could include a list of common adjustments that employers are expected to make, such as providing assistive technology, modifying work schedules, or making physical changes to the workplace.

In addition, the Act could provide clearer guidance on how to balance the needs of the employee with the resources of the employer, to help employers understand what is expected of them. This would help to ensure that the requirement for reasonable adjustments is applied more consistently and effectively.

2. Changes to the Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999:

To strengthen the provisions on mental health, I propose that the Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 be amended to include specific requirements for employers to protect and promote mental health at work.

This could include a requirement for employers to conduct regular mental health risk assessments, to identify and address factors that could harm employees' mental health. It could also include a requirement for employers to have a mental health policy, which sets out their approach to promoting mental health and supporting employees with mental health issues.

In addition, the regulations could require employers to provide mental health training for managers, to help them understand mental health issues, support their staff, and create a mentally healthy work environment.

These changes would help to ensure that mental health is given the same importance as physical health in the workplace, in line with the principle that health and safety at work covers both physical and mental health.
