Differentiate between power and authority

Power and authority are two different concepts but they are closely related.

1. Definition:

   • Power: It is the ability or capacity to do something or act in a particular way. It is the capability to influence others' behavior or the course of events. Power can exist due to personal charisma, knowledge, skills, or access to information.
   • Authority: It is the right to exercise power, which is given by a recognized or legal source. Authority is the legitimate or socially approved use of power. It is the right to command and get the things done by others.

2. Source:

   • Power: It can come from various sources like knowledge, information, wealth, personal attributes, etc. It is not always backed by law or any other legal source.
   • Authority: It is always backed by law or by some legal source. It is given by a higher authority to the lower one.

3. Acceptance:

   • Power: It does not require acceptance by others. It can be exercised without the consent of the people over whom it is being exercised.
   • Authority: It requires acceptance by others. It cannot be exercised without the consent of the people over whom it is being exercised.

4. Stability:

   • Power: It is not always stable and can change with the change in factors like wealth, knowledge, etc.
   • Authority: It is more stable as it is backed by law.

5. Use:

   • Power: It can be used for personal gain or to manipulate others.
   • Authority: It is used to maintain order and enforce rules and regulations.

In conclusion, power is the ability to influence others while authority is the right to exercise that power.
