Abstinence, in its broadest sense, refers to the voluntary restraint from indulging in bodily activities that are widely perceived as giving pleasure. Most frequently, the term refers to sexual abstinence, or abstention from alcohol or food. The practice can arise from religious prohibitions or practical considerations. My perspective on abstinence is a complex one, shaped by personal experiences, cultural background, and philosophical beliefs.

Growing up in a conservative family, the concept of abstinence was introduced to me at an early age. My parents, devout followers of our faith, advocated for abstinence from certain activities, particularly premarital sex and alcohol consumption. They believed that such restraint would not only keep us physically healthy but also morally upright. Their teachings, coupled with the religious doctrines we were taught at church, formed the initial basis of my understanding and acceptance of abstinence.

However, as I grew older and began to interact with a diverse group of people, my perspective on abstinence started to evolve. I met individuals who, despite not practicing abstinence, led healthy and morally upright lives. This challenged my earlier beliefs and led me to question the universality of the principles I had been taught.

In college, I took a philosophy class that further shaped my view on abstinence. We studied various philosophical perspectives on pleasure and restraint, including those of ancient philosophers like Epicurus and modern thinkers like Freud. I learned that pleasure and pain are part of the human experience and that denying oneself of all forms of pleasure could lead to psychological issues.
