How is the Speaker of the House determined?

4. Voting: All 435 representatives then vote for the Speaker. This is done on the House floor, with each representative casting a vote for the nominee of their choice. A candidate must receive an absolute majority of the votes cast, which may be less than 218 if several representatives are absent or vote "present".

5. Result: The candidate who receives the majority of the votes is elected as the Speaker of the House. If no candidate receives the majority, the process is repeated until a Speaker is elected.
