Solution

D. An Ethernet NIC transmits data after listening for the absence of a signal on the media.

This is known as Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection (CSMA/CD). The Network Interface Card (NIC) in an Ethernet LAN listens to the network media before transmitting data. If the media is busy (i.e., a signal is present), the NIC waits and tries again after a random backoff period. If the media is free (i.e., no signal is present), the NIC begins transmitting data. If a collision occurs (i.e., two devices transmit at the same time), the NIC detects this, stops transmitting, and tries again after a random backoff period.
