Solution

Energy can be transferred in three main ways: convection, radiation, and conduction.

  1. Convection: This is the transfer of heat through a fluid (liquid or gas) caused by molecular motion. It occurs when warmer areas of a liquid or gas rise to cooler areas in the atmosphere. As this happens, cooler liquid or gas takes the place of the warmer areas which have risen higher. This cycle results in a continuous circulation pattern and heat is transferred to cooler areas.

  2. Radiation: This is the transfer of energy through space by electromagnetic waves. These waves do not need particles to travel through and thus can move through the vacuum of space. The sun's energy reaches earth by radiation.

  3. Conduction: This is the transfer of energy from one molecule to another within a substance. It occurs when molecules are heated, they move faster and have higher kinetic energy. This energy is then transferred from molecule to molecule, from a higher temperature area to a lower temperature one. This is how, for example, a spoon in a hot cup of coffee eventually gets hot.

So, all three options - convection, radiation, and conduction - are ways in which energy is transferred.
