The absorption of water and minerals is mainly accomplished by the roots of the plant. The roots have tiny hair-like structures called root hairs which increase the surface area for absorption. They penetrate into the spaces between soil particles and come into contact with the soil water. This water contains dissolved minerals which the plant needs for its growth and development. The water and minerals are absorbed by the process of osmosis and active transport respectively. Once inside the root, they are transported upwards to the rest of the plant through the xylem, a type of vascular tissue.
