Describe the reactions, if any, of zinc and copper(II) ions with an excess of aqueoussodium hydroxide.(i) zinc ionsaddition of aqueous sodium hydroxide ........................................................................................................................................................................................................excess sodium hydroxide .............................................................................................................................................................................................................................(ii) copper(II) ionsaddition of aqueous sodium hydroxide ........................................................................................................................................................................................................excess sodium hydroxide .......................................................................................................................................
Solution
(i) Zinc ions
When aqueous sodium hydroxide is added to a solution containing zinc ions, a white precipitate of zinc hydroxide is formed. The reaction can be represented as follows:
Zn2+(aq) + 2OH-(aq) → Zn(OH)2(s)
Upon addition of excess sodium hydroxide, the zinc hydroxide precipitate dissolves to form a colorless solution of sodium zincate. The reaction can be represented as follows:
Zn(OH)2(s) + 2OH-(aq) → Na2Zn(OH)4(aq)
(ii) Copper(II) ions
When aqueous sodium hydroxide is added to a solution containing copper(II) ions, a light blue precipitate of copper(II) hydroxide is formed. The reaction can be represented as follows:
Cu2+(aq) + 2OH-(aq) → Cu(OH)2(s)
Upon addition of excess sodium hydroxide, the copper(II) hydroxide precipitate does not dissolve. Therefore, no further reaction occurs.
