Solution

Alfred Wegener's theory of continental drift was initially rejected for several reasons:

  1. Lack of Mechanism: Wegener couldn't provide a satisfactory explanation for the physical processes which could drive continental movement. His proposed mechanisms, such as centrifugal forces caused by the Earth's rotation or tidal forces from the Moon, were not strong enough to move continents.

  2. Geological Opposition: Many geologists believed that the Earth was solid and rigid, not fluid and dynamic as Wegener's theory suggested. They couldn't accept that continents could move through the solid rocks of the ocean floor.

  3. Biogeographical and Paleoclimatic Evidence: Some scientists argued that the biogeographical and paleoclimatic evidence Wegener used to support his theory could be explained in other ways. For example, they suggested land bridges, now sunk beneath the ocean, could have once connected continents.

  4. Tradition and Resistance to Change: Wegener's
