Solution

The carbon cycle is a complex series of processes through which all of the carbon atoms in existence rotate. The same carbon atoms in your body today have been used in countless other molecules since time began. The wood burned just a few decades ago could have produced carbon dioxide which through photosynthesis became part of a plant. When you eat that plant, the same carbon from the wood is now in you.

The carbon cycle can be broken down into two categories: the fast carbon cycle and the slow carbon cycle. Here are the possible carbon pathways within these cycles:

  1. Fast Carbon Cycle: This is largely the movement of carbon through life forms on Earth, or the biosphere. Around 1,000 gigatons (Gt) of carbon move through this cycle every year. This includes processes such as photosynthesis, respiration, and decomposition.

    • Photosynthesis: Plants pull in carbon dioxide out of the air and use it to make food in a process called photosynthesis. During photosynthesis, the plant combines carbon dioxide with water and uses sunlight to convert it into sugars and oxygen.

    • Respiration: Animals eat the plants and use the carbon to build their own tissues. They release some carbon back into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide through the process of respiration.

    • Decomposition: When plants and animals die, their bodies, wastes, and remains are broken down by bacteria and fungi in a process called decomposition. This releases carbon back into the atmosphere.

  2. Slow Carbon Cycle: This involves the movement of carbon through geological processes. The slow cycle returns carbon to the atmosphere through volcanoes. This cycle can take anywhere from hundreds to millions of years.

    • Sedimentation and Burial: Over time, the dead plants and animals get buried under layers of dirt. Heat and pressure from these layers turn the dead plants and animals into fossil fuels like coal and oil. The carbon that was in their bodies is now stored in these fossil fuels.

    • Volcanic Activity: When a volcano erupts, it releases carbon back into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide.

    • Human Activity: Humans have a major effect on the carbon cycle through activities like burning fossil fuels, which releases stored carbon back into the atmosphere.

These are the main pathways that carbon can take within the carbon cycle.
