Solution

To find the fraction of students who have both a cat and a dog, you multiply the fraction of students who have a cat by the fraction of those students who also have a dog.

1/2 of the students have a cat.

1/4 of those students also have a dog.

So, you multiply 1/2 by 1/4 to find the fraction of students who have both.

1/2 * 1/4 = 1/8

So, 1/8 of the students in Pam's class have both a cat and a dog.
