Solution

Pyruvate oxidation occurs in the mitochondria of a cell. This process is part of cellular respiration, which is how cells generate energy. After glycolysis occurs in the cytoplasm, the resulting pyruvate molecules are transported into the mitochondria. There, each pyruvate molecule is oxidized to form a molecule of carbon dioxide, a molecule of NADH, and a two-carbon molecule known as acetyl CoA. This process is also known as the pyruvate dehydrogenase reaction, named after the enzyme complex that catalyzes it.
